To His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong,

Hongkong.

Your Excellency,

Re Alien Eneny firms in Hongkong.

We had the honour of addressing two letters to

Your Excellency on the 18th inst. and now beg to enclose copies.

Since writing, we have communicated to our Lancashire and

Yorkshire friends Your Excellency's welcome telegram of the

13th inst. (as confirmed in our second letter) and now have

the honour to confirm the answering cable which we ventured

to address to Your Excellency on the 17th inst:-

"Referring cable thirteenth, and meeting Legislative

Council sixth October, manufacturers (and) ourselves

appreciate gratefully Tour Excellency's solicitude

Lancashire and Yorkshire interesta."

Meanwhile the mail has brought us Hongkong papers,

containing a report of the meeting of the Hongkong Legislative

Council held on the 6th October.

Of course, we cannot yet have a full report of the

circumstances which subsequently led to the liquidation of the

alien firms, but whatever those circumstances, it is evident

from the speeches at that meeting that Your Excellency has

shown great concern for British interests at home, whilst

framing such regulations as to prevent monies being remitted

to the aliens' country from Hongkong.
